When most people think of the library, they usually picture a quiet space with rows and rows of books. (Ah, the dream!) However, the Mulvane Public Library is so much more than books (and truthfully, rarely quiet due to the bustling of frequent patronage!) We’re a hub for learning, discovery, and connection, and we offer a surprising number of services that go far beyond book checkouts.
Here are 10 free services you might not know the Library offers:
1. Downloadable eBooks, Audiobooks, Magazines, and More
Can’t make it to the library in person? No problem. With your library card or a State Library of Kansas e-card, you can access thousands of eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines from apps like Libby, cloudLibrary, ComicsPlus, and more! Libby is even compatible with most e-readers, allowing you to skip the checkout cart and borrow books on your Kindle or Nook for free.
2. Museum and Attraction Passes
Explore the Wichita metro without spending a dime! The Mulvane Public Library has an entire collection of Community Explorer Packs, which include passes to local attractions, theme parks, and museums. Not only can you enter local attractions for free, but you can also learn more about where you’re visiting or what you’re learning about through a curated collection of books, puzzles, or games in the pack.
3. Notary Services
From legal documents to school forms and more, the Library offers free Notary services to everyone–you don’t even have to have a library card. (Although you should, because library cards are awesome!) Be sure to call ahead to make sure a notary is available before stopping by.
4. Meeting Rooms and Study Spaces
Need a quiet place to meet, study, or host a small group? The Library has free reservable spaces for individuals and non-profit organizations, including two study rooms, our large multipurpose room, and the computer lab. 5. Interlibrary Loans and Purchase Requests
Can’t find the book you were looking for? Visit the staff desk and we will find it for you!
Mulvane is one of eight libraries in the KanShare consortium, a group of libraries in south-central Kansas that share their collections. Through our consortium and Interlibrary Loan, we can usually find the title you’re looking for. Additionally, the Library always welcomes patron input for purchasing. You can request a title purchase in person at the staff desk or online at mulvanelibrary.org/request.
6. Library of “Things”
Did you know that you can check out much more than books and movies at the Library? The "Library of Things" is a non-traditional library collection offering a variety of borrowable items and equipment. Whether you’re trying out a new hobby, curious about your health, or looking for educational resources, the Library of Things has everything you need for no cost at all. Any cardholder 16 and older can check out everything from microscopes and binoculars to blood pressure cuffs and board games!
8. Technology Assistance
Having trouble with your phone or computer? Librarians are here to help! We provide limited technology support for phones, tablets, e-readers, and sometimes computers. We specialize in problems with apps like Libby, the KanShare catalog, cloudLibrary, and issues in Microsoft Office. You can even “Book a Librarian” for an hour at a time through our website: mulvanelibrary.org/technology-help.
9. Home Delivery
The Library is committed to serving all our patrons within Mulvane city limits, even if they can’t visit us physically. If you are unable to leave your home without assistance due to illness or injury, you can fill out a Home Delivery form, and staff will deliver books right to your door! You don’t even have to pick the titles–you can simply check which genres you like and we will do the rest. 10. Personal Readers' Advisory
Stuck on what to read next? Fear not–you have an entire team of readers at your disposal! Any of our friendly staff will be more than happy to give book recommendations or even research with you to find your next great read. Are you a reluctant reader? We can point you to resources that fit you specifically, whether it be manga, graphic novels, audiobooks, magazines, or even movies. We’ve got you covered!
